Antmusic for Somewhat Older People

Adam Ant is The Blueblack Hussar

A quick note about my having (finally!) seen Adam Ant in a proper live show. Going to what we now, sadly, call a legacy show can be a real roll of the dice. So I drove an hour to the Ventura Theater with hope but, well, not really knowing what I was getting into. I needn’t have worried. Ant, looking as loony as ever, was in perfect voice and played 29 songs in a full 2-hour set.

The band was great. The sound was brutally loud. I heard songs I’d never imagine he’d pull out: “Plastic Surgery,” “Lady,” “Fall In.”

Most notably, though, was being part of a crowd of the least-inhibited mostly 40-somethings that I think I have ever seen. It was glorious. Dancing, singing, shouting, doing the stupid “Prince Charming” dance. It was some really good shit.

Welcome back from the brink, Adam.
